2017 R/V Preservation Work Weekends
The summer project season is fast approaching! We could really use your help in preparing the R/V PRESERVATION
for an exciting season of fun and interesting projects. We are working on some still-in-progress items and include a number of improvements for the new season. Please review the "To Do List"
and "Dream List"
see if there is anything that you could help with. We invite you to join with us and get to know the R/V PRESERVATION
and more people in the GLSPS
. We'd love to share a weekend of boat-work and camaraderie. With the R/V PRESERVATION
and Phil's camper, we can usually house up to a dozen volunteers at a time!
The Depth sounder / sonar unit is faulty on the boat. If you or anyone would like to donate to a fund to be able to purchase a new unit, please click on the "Donations" Button on the left side of this page.
This event is split into separate activities for each day of each weekend. Please register for each day you are able to attend so we can plan tasks and sleeping arrangements based on the skill-sets and headcount of those attending each day.
The task list below will be updated each work weekend (hopefully each day of work). Task progress will be reported in blue
font and completed tasks will be marked (DONE!)

Membership Cruise and BBQ - 6/4/2017
R/V Preservation To Do List - As of 6-04-17
Please Note: Tim Pranke is in charge of ALL painting projects on the R/V PRESERVATION ! All painting instructions and procedures must be approved by Tim. Thank You!
- Pressure wash entire outside of boat - required each year. (Sponge washed Launch weekend) "Done"
- Grind/clean and repaint all pealed/rusted areas - annual process.
- Check the top of the Pres (white roof areas) - completed 2014, verify good coverage. (Still good as of 6-3-17) "Done"
- Aft Upper Roof (where Life Boat sits), needs to be prepared and repainted.
- Clean interior walls and repaint if needed - annual process.
- Inspect rear wall and door. Clean, paint and reseal wall as necessary. Some rust is showing in corners of rear wall. Rust grinding sealing and painting needs to be throughout the season. Inspected 5-28-17 - Still good
- Seal bottom of door and readjust door so it doesn't scrape when opening or closing. Still needs to be done as of 6-04-17
- Clean bilge areas in all compartments. These high-moisture areas may need some paint work or primer applied if bare metal areas are noted. *Bilges cleaned and have noted a few spots that need paint in the Fresh water tank bilge. (With square hole access). Painting Still needs to be performed as of 6-04-17
- Inspect and repair mid-ship scupper drain pipes. Some leakage was noted last season!!! Repair small crack in drain. "Done"
- Clean and paint the rear deck. After paint, re-install the damaged rubber deck mat. As of 5-28-17 it was cleaned only.
- Tim repaired deck supports. We are contemplating some additional changes. We hope to weld more of them in prior to painting.
Mechanical / Electrical
- Check the rear fittings on the new hydraulic steering - slight weep at a fitting still noted? Refill / top off reservoir as needed. Checked abd "Done"
- Check all love joy couplers joining fresh water pump to fuel injection pumps. (2). OK and "Done"
- Still experience some vibration while under way, our next procedure will be to recheck engine alignment - before and after launch? (Will check after launch to accommodate flexing of hull) Recheck while in water or docked in Silver Bay.
- Look for any oil leaks in the engine room. Still have small leaks around front seal of starboard engine. Repaired small leak on drain plug and drain hose. "Done"
- Mount dive ladder to dive platform."Done"
- Check to ensure no leakage is occurring around wires to the radar mast? OK - "Done"
- Chart "Battery Switches" and document to ensure a safe operator procedure to start engines in the event of a discharged battery.
- Check fresh water pump impeller on both engines. They were replaced in May and September 2016. OK and "Done"
Annual Maintenance - Engine
- Change oil on both engines. "Done"
- Change diesel fuel filters for both engines and fill with fuel. "Done"
- Change oil in both injector pumps. "Done"
- Repack all white lithium grease mechanisms on freshwater engine cooling pumps. "Done"
- Repack new packing's in front shaft of fresh water pumps. Port side for now starboard not leaking at this time. Reconfigure suction hose mounting on port engine only. This is to make it much easier to remove fresh water pump to change impeller and repacking the Flax packing's in front pump seal. "Done" (Port engine only)
- Rocker arms and push-rods were replaced (Recheck clearance)? Rechecked, OK - No adjustment needed! "Done"
- Treat fuel with Power up fuel treatment (Purchased from Napa) "Done"
- Engine Hours (2016 Season) after completing above - Port = _873___ Starboard = _853___
- The Port engine had _107_ hours put on it in 2016 and the Starboard engine had _108_ hours put on it.
Annual Maintenance - Boat
- Remove tarp and PVC framing from boat. (DONE!) (Haul back pipes, ropes and bungees to Cities and store in PK's Barn.) "Done"
- Grease both rudder posts. "Done"
- Check both main batteries - add water if necessary (distilled water only). Both replaced 5-28-2017 - "Done"
- Install both brass props - brass keys are stored in orange case in head or attached to props. "Done"
- Check wiper blades and wiper motor operation. Replace wiper blades. (Add 2 inches to length). "Done"
- Replace drinking water filters and prepare system for season. "Done"
- Check O-rings on WATER and FUEL caps!! New o-ring needed on WATER cap??
- Prepare head system (chemical toilet) for season. "Done"
- Replace batteries in CO sensor, smoke detectors, bilge heat sensor and digital clocks. "Done"
- Inspect all fire extinguishers, flip and roll dry chemical extinguishers to prevent chemical compaction - date and sign tags. "Done"
- Inspect and install all safety equipment and check expiration dates for applicable items including: First Aid bag, AED, O2 pack & extra O2 bottle. First Aid bag gone through, missing items replaced. Inspected and "Done"
- Inspect all distress signal equipment, check expiration dates for applicable items. OK and "Done"
- Insert legal paper-work, license, registrations and insurance info in designated areas. (All Captains please see boat logs in RV Preservation Documents "Cruise Logs" section). "Done"
- Install and test all electronics to verify proper function! "Done"
- Verify operation of all switches and indicators on the boat console! "Done"
- Clean debris out of all deck drains (scuppers!). Seal crack in pipe on port side. "Done"
- Inspect engine compartment intake ducting. OK - "Done"
- Final cleanup - clean and vacuum all carpet prior to leaving final weekend! Phil bringing up carpet cleaner when available
Annual Maintenance - Bauer Scuba Compressor (this is stored at Phil Kerber's shop in Corcoran)
- Change oil on 5-Hp Honda engine - use AMSOIL 10W-30 synthetic small engine motor oil. "Done"
- Change oil in Bauer compressor - use human grade synthetic oil. Did not change but was inspected! It looks very clean! "Will change in 2018"
- Remove lines and filter canisters and O2 clean them, repack canisters with new chemicals in both primary and secondary filtering systems. Cleaned and Changed, "Done"
- Check paper air filters at compressor and at air intake on radar mast. Inspected "OK" "Done"
- Check drive pulley belt. OK "Done"
- Check all hoses for wear and any damage. No damage at this time "Done"
- Check CO monitor to see if still showing pink (If pink = OK) Clean and replace CO Monitoring disc and gasket in monitoring equipment. "Done"
- Check all bleed drain valves. OK - "Done"
- Clean any debris and dust from external parts of the compressor. OK, Cleaned "Done"
- Install wet muffler for scuba compressor - can be installed with the compressor! Muffler was repaired again - (Inlet melted again)! "Done"
- The Scuba Compressor had _121_ hours on it at the start of 2016. At the end of 2016 it had 159.6 hours. At the beginning of 2017 it will start at 159.7 hours.
- Install rear roof to transom tarp.
- Corey Daniel and Tom Peterson are still working on this???
- Design and build compressor containment for permanent outside mount.
- It will be built by Dale K after launch
- New horn has been installed! Mountings / wiring need to be modified and roof resealed after rewiring. Hopefully done after launch.
- Fresh water heater installed - need to invert switch, occasional accidental "ON"! (DONE!)
- Design and install deck anchor roller and latch mechanism.
- Install additional 12v Auxiliary plugs and check the plug at the helm. Plug at helm works. We need to install two more
- Install USB Power Charging Stations donated by Jack Decker!!
- Install high temp alarm on both engines? Researching! Some parts have been purchased
- Install thresh-hold under main salon door.
- Check all sacrificial anodes & replace as necessary - swap any zinc anodes with aluminum (note: rudders and heat exchangers are currently protected by zinc anodes! )
- Register MMSI Number with the Coast Guard. - Distress GPS Coordinates option on the Marine Radio. Need to register through Boats US / West Marine. Here is the link. http://www.boatus.com/MMSI/MMSI/ObtainMMSI#!
- Purchase an EPIRB? If it is within the budget?
- Purchase and Install new Depth Finder / Sonar - Looking for Donations to purchase one or have one donated. Will purchase 2017 and install 2018
- Purchase and install new Marine Radio with AIS system in it. "Done"
- Install additional antenna for Marine Radio. "Done"
